Fruit fly traps (sitting on a table) have been discussed many times. But I need to get rid of single individuals on sight. These are some alternatives, but they have big problems:
- vacuum cleaner (way too slow to get it out just for one fruit fly, otherwise a great option)
- handheld small cordless vacuum cleaner (difficult to keep charged and is there a model that is designed to keep fruit flies from escaping?)
- BugZooka (way too big and cumbersome as you have to reload every time you miss)
- zapper rackets (way too big and if flies get trapped, they cook and cause a terrible smell)
- traditional fly swatter: usually fruit flies are in places that are terrible for a swatter (delicate wine glass, small grapes etc.), also they just fly away easily
- basic sticky tape: I tried it, didn't work at all, fruit flies don't stick to it
- a book: semi-effective to swat one inside but very cumbersome compared to a vacuum cleaner
- clapping hands: I like to avoid this (don't want to mess up my hands while having a dinner etc.)
What am I missing? There must a be a clever way. Without electricity would be the best, not a big gadget so that it's very quick to get when needed, cleanable so that it wouldn't be one use only, without poisons (I need to do it over a dinner table).
Has someone tried Black Flag Fly Stick http://www.blackflag.com/products/indoor-products/fly-stick.aspx or Trapro sticky traps https://smile.amazon.com/Trapro-Yellow-Dual-Sided-Sticky-Insect/dp/B01FIE922E ? Is it possible to wave that on a fruit fly, does the fly get caught that way? I tried with one of those sticky pads meant for holding a phone in a car. That had zero effect, the fly did not stick at all.
Perhaps a USB rechargeable handheld vacuum cleaner designed for this purpose might be the answer. With a very good battery so that it doesn't discharge when not used. Any recommendations?
