Filtering/stopping notifications for college emails?

Is there anyway to set my Gmail so that I don't get notified for college emails, and filter them into a specific folder?

I get about a million emails from colleges a day, which makes it a lot harder to see emails that are more important to me. It's also annoying to have my phone go off nonstop because of them. Anyway to fix this?
